| 2. Programme Aims |
 |
Mechanical Engineering is a crucial component in a modern society. As a graduate, you will:
-
learn to apply scientific principles, engineering analysis and industrial design to solve challenging problems that are typical of those found in mechanical engineering;
-
be able to use computers as tools to solve engineering problems;
-
develop the ability to formulate technical problems mathematically and analyse engineering systems;
-
be equipped with the ability to properly select the most suitable materials and methods that are safe, environmentally and aesthetically acceptable, and economically competitive for systems/products and their design and manufacturing;
-
build up the skills to think creatively, to communicate effectively both in oral and written form; and appreciate the ethical and societal responsibilities of an engineer, the importance of life-long learning, the concepts of continuous quality improvement, and the continuing impact of the globalisation of design, manufacturing and marketing of technical goods and services.

| 3. Characteristics |
 |
We use the learning outcome oriented teaching approach, which offers hands-on training, extensive laboratory experience and state of the art computational methods. We also provide practical transferable skills and encourage deep learning and self development.
The programme has been accredited by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE), and provides excellent opportunities in job placement on the completion of study.
Our students receive a broad foundation in Mechanical Engineering in their first four semesters. Elective subjects are offered in an area of their choice as a career stream in their final year of study. The three career streams that are offered by the Department are:
